Illustration style

As an illustrator I love to try new things, keep changing the way I draw and play around with different media. However, if I ever wanted to have bigger illustrator projects, I should develop a significant style. Something that makes me stand out from other illustrators but especially something that puts me in a certain category, making it easier for people to find me and hire for suitable projects.

This categorizing just sounds boring, or? I want to vary what I do. Although as a graphic designer I understand that art directors need to know what they are buying. Luckily, I am primarily a graphic designer, so I don't have to care about standing out from the crowd as an illustrator or having a trendy style. I don't have to force anything. My former teacher actually said, that personal style will shine through from your work anyways. No matter how different media or working method you use. Plus: shouldn't the content serve the form anyways?

Despite all of this, I keep trying to find my own style! I observe my way of drawing, what looks interesting to me, what kind of forms I like. I don't know if it has brought me any further - I keep drawing these same old girlie-girlies like before. So I'm still not quite there yet. Or maybe it's that the result doesn't satisfy me.

The other perspective in finding a style as an illustrator, is that it also makes your life easier. You don't have to invent the world every time again and again. But does it get boring already at that point? Probably. Although I tend to believe at that point your style will develop towards some other direction already. But thats already another story.

Inspirational characters

I browse through several blogs and websites in a week actively (+passively) gathering inspiration. The visit of my 7-year-old god-son this weekend however reminded me again how much more funnily kids think. For them there is no limits: stories often have funny twists and everyday situations are seen with different eyes.

These drawings above are already from last summer, but they still make me laugh. The blue characters drawn by my god-son are hilarious. I was been told to copy those drawings, but I couldn't do that, of course. (You can see my purple drawings there as well... :D )

I should try to remember that inspiration is usually closer than you think.

Cartoon trip

I am a huge cartoon blog junkie. I read regularly for example this, this and this cartoon blog. So of course last weekend I had to check the 24th Helsinki Comics Festival out. It was simply awesome! So many comic books and albums. So many interesting stories and pictures. And also such nice place and nice people!

The amount of Finnish comic artists and comic albums blew me away. At the festival you could really see how many there really are. Too bad my budget wasn't that big, so I could only buy few books - some of them that I have already started reading. Fun!

There was also other stuff on sold than comics. Especially Kaija Papu's postcards were great. But also the whole table of Napa Illustrations was interesting with it's flipbooks etc.

After buying some comics I also got some pocket money left for badges, which seemed to be a crucial part of comic genre. (?) This cute little thing I then adopted home. It's made by Meri Mort.

Next year again, for sure!

These dudes appeared in my sketch book already a long time ago. I used to draw every day in the metro. Recently however my free time drawing has been on a pause. I have one interesting freelance book cover project right now and also my thoughts are already on my final project I will start next year. I am REALLY looking forward to that! :) I will now try finding some time to draw something relaxed and non-stressed again - to get a good flow!
